The Vistula District

Events and activities

The projects carried out under the name ‘Wisła District’ ensure there is something for everyone along the river. Fans of outdoor activities can enjoy a recreational path, the Vistula Cycle Route (NSR), outdoor gyms, a workout zone, a climbing wall and numerous opportunities for water sports. Families with children can head to their chosen beach for a picnic, make use of the natural playgrounds or take a stroll along the Vistula boulevards. Boat owners and sailing enthusiasts have Port Czerniakowski at their disposal, whilst those looking for a bit of fun can visit the numerous club cafés. So many people, so many ideas and ways to spend time by the river!

The Campaign and the Vistula District Code

We are constantly developing and improving the Vistula District’s offering – for you. We carry out all our activities with respect for the Vistula’s wildlife and natural values. That is why, every year, we present a new phase of the Vistula District campaign to promote the responsible use of our shared Vistula heritage. The Vistula District Code was also created for this purpose.

The Vistula District Code of Conduct

We encourage visitors to the Warsaw section of the Vistula to enjoy everything the river has to offer, in accordance with the principles of the Vistula District Code:

  2. I clean up after myself
We invite you to relax on the beaches and boulevards, asking that you clean up after yourselves.

  6. I drink alcohol only where permitted
Please consume alcohol only in designated areas and clear up after yourselves.
  7. Bonfires in permitted areas

Wisła District Events

Throughout the year, in each of the Vistula’s four seasons, we encourage you to come to the river for rest and recreation – both on the wild banks and on the boulevards. At the same time, we encourage you to use the Capital City Passenger Shipping service – it may sound like a cliché, but Warsaw seen from the water is a completely different city. We believe that everyone should go on a cruise along the Vistula at least once in their life!

To showcase all the corners and possibilities of the Vistula District throughout the year, we organise regular events, and every year we also try something new. Our events are always open to all and free of charge. We’re always waiting for you by the Vistula – whatever the weather and whatever the season.

Opening of the Season on the Vistula

Every year, during the long May bank holiday weekend, Warsaw Tourist Lines kick off their season – this means that the ferries connecting the banks of the Vistula return to the river, along with other vessels. With the start of the season, we launch a series of free cruises for everyone. We also encourage you to try your hand at sailing, rowing, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. The riverside café-clubs are eagerly awaiting the first warm days to welcome you and show you what they have to offer this summer season.

Warsaw Beach

Warsaw’s beach attendants stationed in their distinctive booths have become a summer tradition in the Vistula District. The beach booth serves as an information point for all activities taking place on the beaches and along the river. The beach attendants lend out free sun loungers, beach and sports equipment, toys for children and a bowl of water for dogs. They are happy to help, advise and suggest ways to spend your time by the Vistula. They will recommend events and introduce you to the boating options in the Vistula District. If necessary, they will dress a wound or call for help.

You’ll find the Warsaw Beach Attendants during the summer season on the right-bank beaches: Saska, Poniatówka and Rusałka, and on the left bank of the Vistula – at Żoliborz Beach and the beach on Patton Boulevard.

Beach activities

The Warsaw Beach Crew, stationed on Warsaw’s beaches during the summer, encourage everyone – especially children – to take part in weekend activities.

Look out for information about the attractions organised by the Warsaw Beach Crew near the beach huts and on social media.

Beach clean-ups

At least once a season, the Warsaw Beach Crew join forces with local residents to clean up their beaches. Unfortunately, despite numerous awareness campaigns and regular cleaning of the beaches and areas along the Vistula by municipal services, the Vistula riverbank undergrowth hides an embarrassing secret – discarded bottles, cigarette butts and other traces of feasting and revelry. So we’re showing that rubbish is just as easy to take away as it is to bring, and that looking after our shared space is something to be proud of.

The campaign culminates in early September with a massive joint clean-up of one of the beaches.

Vistula Festival

All summer long, the banks of the Vistula are buzzing with life. Club cafés organise concerts, workshops and dozens of free outdoor events. NGOs have a ready-made programme of attractions, taking place both on land and on water. Every day, there are sports, recreational, sailing, educational and dance activities on offer. Picnics take place in Kahl Square, whilst sporting competitions are held on the beaches. In the most picturesque spots, you can enjoy yoga sessions.

The Vistula Festival, which we organise on the first weekend of September, serves as a round-up of everything that has taken place on the river and its banks during the season. We invite residents to join us then to give thanks for another wonderful summer gifted to us by the Vistula. You can try out the activities that have been most popular over the past few months. We swim, take part in workshops and listen to live music. Finally, Stołeczna Żegluga Pasażerska sets off on an evening parade along the central stretch of the Vistula. The boats look even more beautiful than usual, as they sail together in festive formation, decorated and illuminated, heading home – that is, to Czerniakowski Port.

Equinox

When night equals day, it is the final sign that summer is over. We are entering the autumn season – a time of multicoloured leaves, autumn mists and the first cool nights.

On this extraordinary night, shrouded in mystery and steeped in Slavic legends, we invite you on an intimate cruise, with Czerniakowski Port as our destination. In the harbour basin, we’ll enjoy a concert from the boats on the water. On the roof of the Czarna Barka – a permanent fixture at the Port – the artists will have the chance to enchant everyone with their music. The entire concert takes place amidst beautiful lighting, surrounded by the lovely atmosphere of Czerniakowski Port.

The space by the Vistula is also a venue for a variety of workshops in the spirit of ‘less waste’.

Four Seasons of the Vistula (sailing school)

The craziest and most spontaneous (though planned) event in the Vistula District. We meet on Rusałka Beach with its enchanting view of Warsaw’s Old Town, then shed our winter clothes and, dressed in whatever we like, warm up to the music before jumping into the river together for a few unforgettable minutes. And so on, three times. Then warm soup and a great mood for the whole day. Throughout the event, we are accompanied by instructors and experienced cold-water swimming masters. All to the accompaniment of lively music. Water rescue staff and a municipal police boat unit ensure the safety of participants.

We go winter swimming together from mid-November to mid-December. We encourage fancy dress and outdoor fun. Rain and wind don’t bother us. Snow and frost bring joy and lift our spirits.

Wisła Sauna

The Finnish sauna at Czerniakowski Port has won the hearts of Warsaw’s residents. In the first six months alone, over 9,000 people have used it.

The wooden, two-storey structure was entirely conceived, designed and built in Warsaw. The interior of the sauna features a panoramic window through which visitors can admire the surrounding nature – the NATURA 2000 protected area of the Middle Vistula Valley. On a daily basis, the harbour is home to beavers, otters and river birds, and most of the banks have been left in their natural state. For this reason, the sauna’s panoramic window faces the natural bank.

It can accommodate up to 8 people. The sauna has a usable area of 18.6 m², with the sauna room itself measuring 7 m². In addition, there is a toilet, shower, changing room and relaxation area, as well as a roof terrace.

The Vistula Sauna is a participatory budgeting project implemented by the Warsaw City Greenery Authority. It opened in November 2020.
