The Vistula flood defences are the most critical infrastructure from the perspective of the safety of Warsaw’s residents. We manage a total of 12 flood defences (approx. 40 km). We continuously monitor the technical condition and general state of the defences and take the necessary measures to keep them in good repair.
We carry out maintenance work two or three times a year. As part of this maintenance, we mow the embankment slopes and repair any damage (holes and gaps) on the slopes, on the crest of the embankments or at the embankment access points. We also maintain and repair hydraulic structures, such as embankment sluices and culverts, as well as hydrotechnical facilities – e.g. the Czerniakowska Gate in Czerniakowski Port and the Gocław Bluszcze Pumping Station.
Information regarding the structures comprising the passive flood protection system of the Capital City of Warsaw is available on the map.um.warszawa.pl website under the ‘Vistula Embankments’ tab.
A list of the embankments we maintain can be found under the ‘Water Areas’ tab.
