Warsaw Reedbed

Full project name: Conservation of endangered species associated with aquatic habitats in Warsaw.

As part of the project, we carried out the renaturation of several water bodies:

We altered the shoreline of the water bodies, introducing shallow areas and zones covered with reeds. We removed invasive fish species from some of the water bodies. As part of the project, shelters for amphibians and artificial islands were also created. Sluices were also installed on ditches in Kabacki Forest, which locally raise the groundwater level and slow down its outflow. We also removed invasive species from these areas, namely ash-leaved maples and knotweed.

The project was co-financed under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme for 2014–2020.

Bird conservation along the Vistula

Full project title: Protection of key bird species’ habitats in the Middle Vistula Valley under the intense pressure of the Warsaw conurbation.

Thanks to this project, we have provided additional breeding sites for waders. We have created sandy islands isolated from the mainland in the main channel of the Vistula and built an artificial breeding island in the basin of Żerański Port.

We have also channelled recreational and leisure-related human impact (human activities affecting the natural environment) in the floodplain and the Vistula riverbed so that it is concentrated in selected areas, thereby relieving pressure on sites of high natural value:

The project was co-financed by the European Community’s LIFE+ Financial Instrument and funds from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW).
