About us

We are a budgetary unit of the Capital City of Warsaw, whose main task is the maintenance and development of green spaces in the capital. We look after over 1,052 hectares of green spaces along roads classified as provincial, district or national roads. In addition, we look after 32 parks and over 100 squares, green spaces, pocket parks and other landscaped green areas. But that’s not all – an important part of our work involves water areas, as well as boulevards, beaches and recreational paths along the Vistula.

What we do

Not just green spaces

Contrary to the name of our unit, we deal not only with green spaces, but also with canals, water reservoirs and flood defences. We manage 60 km of canals, 35 km of flood defences and over 40 water reservoirs with a total area of approx. 78 hectares. In addition, we oversee the operation of the Gocław Bluszcze Pumping Station, which provides flood protection for a significant part of Warsaw’s right bank.

We create green spaces that are friendly to residents and developed with residents

One of our priorities is the development of green spaces. This primarily involves creating new parks and squares, as well as maintaining and modernising existing ones. It also includes the daily upkeep of street greenery, innovative floral displays across Warsaw, as well as the maintenance and care of street furniture and playgrounds. We are committed to ensuring that the areas we manage are accessible to all residents and meet the needs of various user groups. We carry out new investments and planting as part of our unit’s remit, but also through projects funded by the participatory budget and the Green Fund for Warsaw. We actively involve Warsaw’s residents in greening our city through our original Green Volunteering project.

Biodiversity, education and innovation

Our aim is also to safeguard biodiversity in Warsaw and protect the city’s flora and fauna. In the areas we manage, we limit mowing, sow flower meadows, conduct bird and bat surveys, and implement pioneering projects on water bodies.

Environmental education is a key element of our work. Many activities in this area are carried out at the Kamień Educational Pavilion, which has become the informal ‘town hall’ of the Vistula District. It is worth noting, however, that we organise educational events – walks, workshops and classes – throughout the year in the areas we manage, as well as during events organised by the city and beyond!

Our unit, together with other municipal units, is involved in the development of a modern system for managing Warsaw’s green spaces. The results of this work include the standards of the Tree Rights Charter, the Tree Crown Map for the whole of Warsaw, and the MoDrzew app, which supports the inventory and monitoring of tall trees.

Our mission

We connect people with nature
We help create and care for the best possible living environment in Warsaw

Mission, vision and working style of the Warsaw City Greenery Board

Our team

The Green Areas Board team comprises specialists from various fields, united by a single goal: a Warsaw that is even greener, more accessible, friendlier and more biodiverse.

Gardeners, horticultural coordinators, floral design experts, as well as dendrologists and biodiversity specialists play a key role in maintaining green spaces. Every year, they plan stunning flowerbeds for you, but they also carry out tree inspections and monitor the condition of green spaces on an ongoing basis to ensure your safety and the protection of nature. They talk about their work during workshops at the Kamień Education Pavilion, on walks with residents, or as part of the Green Volunteering scheme.

Another key task of our unit is the management of water bodies, which is carried out by experts from the Water Development Department.

You surely enjoy getting together and taking part in various events along the Vistula. You should therefore know that Warsaw’s unofficial 19th district is managed by the Vistula Department, which also oversees park construction projects in this very part of the capital. Speaking of investments, it is worth mentioning the Green Space Development Department, which, amongst other things, modernises and builds new parks and squares.

Our team consists of nearly 300 people – among them are landscape architects, property management experts, specialists in education and public relations, specialists in reviewing project documentation, and highly skilled workers who repair and improve the infrastructure on our sites. We work on Hoża, Krucza and Bartycka streets, at the Bluszcze Pumping Station, Przystań Warszawa, Czerniakowski Port, the Kamień Educational Pavilion and, of course, out in the field.
