Green Volunteering

Want to do something good for the climate and green spaces in Warsaw? Get in touch, roll up your sleeves, and let’s work together to make the capital greener!

About Green Volunteering

Through Green Volunteering, we enable people living in Warsaw to get involved in the day-to-day work of our unit. Together, we help prevent the effects of climate change and contribute to increasing biodiversity in the capital. At the same time, it’s an opportunity to learn about how we design and maintain green spaces in Warsaw.

Together with volunteers, we create perennial beds and plant bulb flowers, amongst other things. These tasks do not require extensive gardening experience, and a group of people equipped by us with the necessary tools and knowledge will certainly manage. We carry out these activities under the watchful eye of our gardeners, based on a plan they have prepared. Another option is for volunteers to get involved in cleaning up the wild banks of the Vistula and the area around Jeziorko Czerniakowskie.

Who can apply

Our volunteers include both individuals and organised groups from companies, institutions or organisations. Together, we plant perennials and bulbous flowers and clean up the wild banks of the Vistula.

Volunteers support Warsaw’s green spaces by planting new plants, selected in consultation with our gardeners.

Frequently asked questions

Our company would like to get involved in green volunteering. What do we need to do?

Consider roughly how many people could take part and how much time you can dedicate to the initiative. It is also worth determining whether you have the means to contribute financially. We recommend contacting us at least three weeks before the planned date of the initiative.

What formalities do we need to complete to sign up for volunteering?

First, please fill in the application form:

If you are a group operating, for example, as part of a staff volunteering scheme, and the initiative is more complex (such as planting plants together), we will sign an agreement together. If you are an individual volunteer, we will enter into a verbal agreement, as our initiatives do not exceed one day. We try to keep formalities to a minimum.

Can I sign up to volunteer without being part of a group?

Of course! We also organise activities specifically for individual volunteers and would be delighted to invite you to join us. If you’d like to work with us to support Warsaw’s green spaces – please fill in the Green Volunteering Application Form for individuals. Once we’ve received your email, we’ll add you to our list and let you know when we’re planning our next initiative for individual volunteers.

What does the planting involve?

The details of each campaign are agreed individually between the organiser’s coordinator and the coordinator from the Warsaw City Greenery Board. We try to tailor the task to the group’s capabilities. We take into account its size, experience and the time it can devote to planting.

On the day of planting, we provide the equipment. We bring spades, rakes, trowels and all other necessary tools. You provide the disposable items, such as gloves or cleaning fluid. Our experts will ensure you are properly prepared, conduct health and safety training, and make sure you plant the plants correctly.

Plants have their preferred planting seasons. The bulbs of flowers such as daffodils, tulips and Siberian squill like the arrival of the autumn chill. We plant perennials in spring and autumn. The same applies to shrubs. We try to limit planting during the summer months due to the heat and water shortages.

What does the clean-up campaign involve?

As volunteers, you will be cleaning up Warsaw’s wilder areas, such as riparian forests, beaches, meadows along the Vistula, or the area around Jeziorko Czerniakowskie. You provide the bags, gloves and cleaning supplies for the volunteers; we’ll take care of waste collection. Cleaning up the city’s wild green spaces is a great opportunity to get to know some of Warsaw’s less obvious spots better.
